Self esteem and confidence

Do you struggle with low self esteem and self-confidence?

Hypnotherapy can help you develop healthier self-beliefs, strengthen your confidence, and move forward towards the life you want. When self-belief is low, it can feel as though things will never change. You may find yourself believing that you are not capable of achieving what you want, or that you are somehow not worthy of success or happiness.

Low self-esteem and lack of confidence often develop from negative experiences in the past. Early childhood experiences and relationships while growing up can shape the beliefs we form about ourselves. The thoughts and feelings connected to these experiences can continue to influence how we see ourselves and respond to situations later in life. Sometimes these feelings can also develop after a specific event that changes how we perceive ourselves.

Over time, these negative beliefs can become deeply rooted in the subconscious mind and begin to influence behaviour in subtle but powerful ways. Eventually, it may feel as though this is simply “the way you are”.

Low confidence and self-esteem can hold you back from pursuing what you truly want and reaching your full potential. You may avoid opportunities because you fear failure, believe you are not good enough, or feel you do not deserve success. These beliefs can affect many areas of life and impact your overall wellbeing.

In reality, these beliefs and thought patterns can be changed.

How hypnotherapy can help you believe in yourself

Hypnotherapy works by helping you access the subconscious mind, where these beliefs are stored. By gently reframing negative thought patterns and replacing them with more positive and empowering beliefs, hypnotherapy can help you build lasting confidence and develop a healthier, more positive view of yourself.

With the right support, it is possible to break free from limiting beliefs and begin living your life with greater confidence, self-worth, and optimism.

If low confidence or self-esteem is holding you back, feel free to get in touch to arrange a free 30-minute consultation.

Stress and Anxiety

Managing stress and anxiety with hypnotherapy

We all live in a fast-paced world, juggling external demands and internal pressures that can leave us feeling overwhelmed. Stress and anxiety are not weaknesses—they are your nervous system’s natural response to perceived danger. Stress helps you respond to pressure, while anxiety is that persistent worry that can show up even without a clear trigger.

Our bodies aren’t designed to stay on high alert all the time. When stress and anxiety stick around, your sympathetic nervous system stays activated. Adrenaline races through your body, your heart pounds, and cortisol keeps your energy levels high. In the short term, this helps you respond to challenges—but if it goes on for too long, your body can’t recover properly. Common signs include a racing heart, shallow breathing, tension, sleep problems, digestive issues, irritability, headaches, and difficulty making decisions. Over time, chronic stress can affect both physical health and mental well-being.

Rest and relaxation allow the nervous system to reset and recover. Sadly, many of us see rest as a luxury rather than a necessity. In reality, taking time to rest is essential for maintaining both physical and mental health enabling us to live life to the full.

Stress and anxiety affect everyone differently. What feels overwhelming for one person may feel manageable for another, depending on their life experiences, current pressures, as well as personal coping styles.  Some people hide their stress extremely well too, continuing to function day to day while feeling overwhelmed inside. I remember feeling completely inadequate in the supermarket queue with my two young children, watching other mothers seem calm and in control. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy, aren’t we?

How stress and anxiety work in the body

Your subconscious sees events that cause stress and anxiety as threats, activating the sympathetic nervous system and triggering the “fight-or-flight” response. Adrenaline increases heart rate and alertness, while cortisol maintains energy and helps regulate metabolism and immune function. This is useful in short-term danger, but if the response is prolonged, the body cannot recover properly.

Normally, once the danger passes, the parasympathetic nervous system takes over, slowing the heart rate, restoring digestion, and allowing the body to rest and recover. Problems arise when the heightened response continues. The subconscious cannot distinguish between real or imagined life or death situations so will react in the same way.  It will therefore react the same way when a car pulls out in front of you as work or study related issues, financial worries, family life pressures. This is why even everyday situations can feel overwhelming. Whatever external or internal pressures we experience which makes us feel anxious or fearful, our sympathetic nervous system will be activated.

How hypnotherapy can help you feel calmer and more in control

Hypnotherapy can help your body turn off the fight-or-flight response and activate its natural relaxation mode, easing tension, slowing the heart rate, and calming the mind. It can not only provide immediate relief and relaxation; but can help to retrain your mind and body to handle future stress and anxiety in a calm, controlled and confident manner using new positive responses which don't activate the fight and flight response.

This allows you to retrain your mind and body to respond to stress and anxiety in a calmer controlled way, putting you back in control and allowing your decisions to be made from a  place of peace, rather than a automatic reaction which may not always be the right one.

Through hypnotherapy, you can:

  • Calm your nervous system and ease tension
  • Replace worry and negative thinking with positive, empowering responses
  • Build resilience to manage challenges calmly
  • Strengthen long-term coping skills

Hypnotherapy doesn’t mask stress and anxiety—it helps your mind and body reset, recover, and respond in healthier ways, giving you back control. You can feel more confident knowing you are able to handle life’s challenges in a calm, controlled way.

I can help you understand the causes of your stress and anxiety and teach practical relaxation techniques to help you feel calmer and more in control.

If stress or anxiety is affecting your life, you don’t have to face it alone—book a free consultation to explore how hypnotherapy could help you feel calmer and more in control.

Menopausal Support

The menopause and how hypnotherapy can help support you through this stage in life

The menopause can feel confusing, unpredictable, and at times overwhelming.  One minute you feel fine, the next you’re flushed, exhausted, tearful, anxious, or struggling to find the right word.  Many women quietly wonder, “What is happening to me?”  Luckily there is much more information about the menopause out there and it's more socially acceptable to talk about it now.  This is reassuring as we feel we aren't alone and that there is a wide variety of help out there.

As hormone levels fluctuate, they affect far more than just your periods. They influence sleep, mood, stress sensitivity, memory and brain fog plus overall confidence.  When no one has explained this clearly, it’s easy to feel worried that something is wrong.  When we don’t understand what’s happening inside our bodies, it’s incredibly difficult to know how to help ourselves.

Instead of feeling in control, we can be left feeling helpless, frustrated, or even hopeless — wondering why things feel so different and unsure what we are supposed to do about it.  "If only I could do something to help myself."

When you understand the 'why', everything changes.

Knowledge brings reassurance.

Understanding builds confidence.

With understanding, you can begin to take calm, informed steps to reclaim your sense of control and feel truly empowered.

This is the rationale behind The 6 week 'Hypnotherapy for Menopause Support Programme'.

This 6-week programme was created to offer more than information.
It also offers an open space to enable more understanding, reassurance, and practical support.

Each week combines clear information about what is happening in the body and brain with carefully designed hypnotherapy techniques and therapeutic reflection relating to the topic of the week.  As your nervous system learns to settle and feel safe, many symptoms can begin to soften.

The programme integrates evidence-informed hypnotherapy, psychoeducation, and guided reflection to help you:

  • Understand the emotional, physical, and cognitive changes associated with menopause
  • Reduce stress and anxiety linked to hormonal shifts
  • Improve sleep and emotional regulation
  • Strengthen confidence and self-belief
  • Develop coping strategies that genuinely work for you
  • Make informed, healthier lifestyle choices — if and when you choose to

Menopause can sometimes feel like it’s taking control of your life.
This programme is designed to help you feel back in partnership with your body.  Rather than fighting the changes, we work gently with your mind and nervous system - empowering you to navigate this stage with greater calm, clarity, and confidence.  Menopause is not an ending.  It is a transition - and with the right support, it can also be a powerful new beginning.

This programme is available as a group session or on a 1 to 1 basis.

Phobias

What  is a phobia?

A phobia is an intense and persistent fear of a specific object, situation, or activity. Common examples include fears of flying, heights, wasps, needles, or public speaking. While these situations may appear manageable to others, for someone with a phobia the fear can feel very real and extremely distressing.

Phobias can trigger strong physical and emotional reactions, such as a rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, dizziness, or nausea — even when there is little or no real danger present.

Although many people with phobias recognise that their fear may be irrational, they often feel unable to control their reaction. This is because the response is driven by the subconscious mind, which is trying to protect them from what it perceives to be a threat.

Over time, a phobia can begin to affect daily life. People may go to great lengths to avoid the feared situation, which can limit opportunities, restrict activities, and reduce overall quality of life.

The good news is that these fear responses can be changed.

How hypnotherapy can help you feel calm and confident when facing your phobia

Hypnotherapy can help you address and overcome fears, allowing you to regain a sense of calm, control, and confidence when facing situations that once felt overwhelming.

Hypnotherapy works by helping you access the subconscious mind, where these fear responses are stored. In hypnosis, while in a deeply relaxed and focused state, the individual can safely experience the feared situation in a calm, controlled, and non-threatening way.  This allows the subconscious mind to reframe the fear response, replacing it with feelings of calm, confidence, and control.

As a result, by gently reframing the fear response and beginning to replacing it with feelings of calm, confidence, and control, hypnotherapy can help you respond differently when faced with the situation in real life.

With the right support, it is possible to overcome a phobia and begin living your life without the constant need to avoid the things you once feared.

If a phobia is having a significant impact on your life, it doesn’t have to stay that way. With the right support, it is possible to change the way your mind responds to fear and begin feeling calmer and more in control.

sleep issues

Do you struggle with sleep issues?

Sleep difficulties can affect every part of your life, leaving you feeling drained, irritable, and stuck in a cycle of tiredness and frustration.

If you lie awake at night watching the clock, feeling frustrated that your mind simply will not switch off, you are not alone. Many people struggle with racing thoughts, frequent waking, or difficulty drifting into restful sleep.

The good news is that the mind can learn to relax again, and healthy sleep patterns can be restored.

How hypnotherapy can help you sleep better

Hypnotherapy addresses the underlying causes of sleep difficulties rather than just managing the symptoms. Sleep problems are often linked to stress, anxiety, or unhelpful thought patterns, so identifying these root causes can make a real difference.

Hypnotherapy works by guiding you into a deeply relaxed and focused state — similar to the natural state your mind enters just before sleep. In this calm and comfortable state, the subconscious mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions that support healthy change.

Stress, anxiety, negative associations with sleep, and racing thoughts can be gently released and replaced with feelings of calm, safety, and relaxation. Hypnotherapy can also help establish healthier bedtime routines, retraining your mind to associate sleep with rest rather than tension or worry.

By calming the nervous system and gradually resetting your subconscious response to sleep, hypnotherapy can help you fall asleep more easily, stay asleep longer, and enjoy deeper, more restorative rest — so you can wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the day ahead.

If sleep difficulties are affecting your life, it doesn’t have to stay that way. With the right support, it is possible to change how your mind responds to sleep and begin feeling calmer, more relaxed, and well-rested.

Over thinking and PROCRASTINATION

Do you struggle with overthinking or procrastination?

Overthinking and procrastination often go hand in hand, but they are not the same. Overthinking keeps your mind stuck in a cycle of “what ifs” and endless analysis, while procrastination shows up as delaying or avoiding tasks altogether.

Together, they can create stress, overwhelm, and leave you feeling stuck — unable to move forward or make progress, even when you want to.

The good news is that these patterns can be changed.

How hypnotherapy can support you to take action.

Hypnotherapy can help by addressing the subconscious patterns that contribute to both overthinking and procrastination. These patterns might include a fear of failure, fear of success, perfectionism, or low self-confidence.

In a deeply relaxed and focused state, you can safely explore and reframe the beliefs that keep you stuck. Stress and self-doubt are reduced, while confidence, motivation, and mental clarity are strengthened.

Tasks begin to feel less overwhelming, and your mind gradually learns to associate taking action with calm and control rather than anxiety or pressure.

If overthinking or procrastination is affecting your life, it doesn’t have to stay that way. With the right support, it is possible to change the way your mind responds and start taking action with confidence and ease.

If you would like to find out how hypnotherapy may be able to help you, feel free to get in touch to arrange a free 30-minute consultation.

Achieve Your Goals with Hazel Smyth Hypnotherapy's Hypnotherapy

Healthy eating, habits and addictions

Are eating habits or addictions affecting your life?

Hypnotherapy can help establish healthier eating habits and support recovery from addictions by exploring your relationship with food or the addictive substance.

It works by identifying the triggers, as well as any underlying thoughts and habits that have contributed to unhealthy behaviours, so that you can gradually replace them with healthier, more positive choices.

Many habits — whether related to food, smoking, vaping, alcohol, or other substances — often develop as coping mechanisms for stress, anxiety, or emotional distress. Willpower alone is not always enough to overcome our powerful subconscious mind, where habits, emotions, and behaviours are stored. In fact, around 90–95% of our daily decisions are made subconsciously, which helps explain why breaking well-established habits can feel so difficult — especially when they are connected to the body’s natural protective responses.

How hypnotherapy can support healthy habits

During hypnosis, and while in a deeply relaxed and focused state, hypnotherapy can help introduce positive suggestions that weaken the response to triggers, reduce cravings, and build healthier coping strategies. By working at a subconscious level, hypnotherapy aims to replace destructive habits with healthier patterns, supporting lasting behavioural change.

Over time, this can help you regain confidence in your choices and feel more in control of your relationship with food or addictive behaviours.

If you would like support with any eating habit or addiction, feel free to get in touch to find out more or arrange a free 30-minute consultation.
